"excellent service from a community team"

About: Ayrshire & Arran Community Services / Physiotherapy Occupational Therapy

(as a relative),

My dad has a progressive condition, but recently had a fall and a fairly sudden deterioration in his mobility.   My mum is his carer and was having to give him a huge amount of help to transfer into his wheelchair, use the bathroom etc.   She was exhausted after just one day of this and didn't really know where to turn.   The GP had been out to visit and ruled out other medical causes for the changes.   I contacted the local Intermediate Care Team and was able to refer my dad directly to them.   The person who answered the phone was very approachable and helpful.   Two members of the team were at the house within 3 or 4 hours of my call, and were able to give immediate and practical help to my mum and dad.   More members of the team came out the next day to make some more substantial changes to his bed and bathroom which again made a huge difference to my mum and dad.   Further referrals have been made to help with some other areas of need.   I have been so impressed by the speed that the team was able to respond, the way they have been able to easily and quickly link in to the relevant professions, and obtain the right equipment to support my dad.   It has made an immediate and positive difference to his ability to move about, and knowing that professional support is there has really helped me and my mum.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear cheeseandbiscuits,

Thank you for taking time to share this with us on Care Opinion. I am so sorry your Dad's mobility has become more of a problem but it is really good to hear how well the service has worked to help your mum and dad (and you of course). As we all know, communication is the linchpin of what we do and it sounds as if this service has cracked that nut. I would really like to pass this to the team involved but I would need some more information. As we have more than one Intermediate Care Team I would need to know which area of Ayrshire your mum and dad live. I would appreciate greatly if you can drop me a quick email to let me know which area they live in, and quote 533299.

My email address is Eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

All the best to you all,

Kindest regards,

Eunice
