"Oesophageal motility studies"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

I had an appointment for oesophageal manometry and 24 hour ph studies at hairmyres hospital located within the rehabilitation unit.

I would like to share a few points I thought during my visit

1. this is an invasive procedure similar to a scope so why is it being carried out in a rehabilitation unit should it not be carried out some where more appropriate like day surgery or on an annex to A&E

2. the staff, both staff were proficient and worked well both polite and welcoming very focused very informative and knowledgeable

3. as I pointed out this test is classed as an invasive procedure should the staff not be wearing scrubs instead of uniforms. as per infection control policies

4. on the point of infection control at the work top area there are 3 designated areas ph set up, clean area and dirty area there is no visible divide between these area leaving little space on the worktop

5. during the test we are given bread and butter but I seen no storage for the butter so does it just get left out? and it is kept on the same worktop as the three designated area - would this not contaminate the areas?

6.  placement of the 24hour catheter, although it felt very secure and was relatively comfortable during the 24 hours the information leaflet does not prepare you for what it will look like when you leave. I feel that there should be a better description of how it will look in the leaflet

7. the clinic room has what I assume is lovely new chairs for the patients but they are paired with an old desk with visible scratched and marks on it, it looked clean enough just very old and worn it this appropriate in a clinical room where these types of test are being carried out

I know it sounds like I am nit-picking on things and throwing bad remarks on the department but the test and the staff were good and I couldn't have asked for better treatment but I feel that there is room for improvements in the department

Dear Friendly Advice,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post this extensive feedback. In view of the points which you have raised I have asked the Infection Prevention and Control Team to review the area as a priority.

Your kind words relating to the attitude and ability of the staff are much appreciated and will be passed on to those involved.

We are always looking to improve the patient information that we provide in relation to this procedure and have recently produced an updated Patient Information Leaflet. Your feedback on this new version of the leaflet is really important and we will certainly take note of it when we produce the next iteration of this publication.

Kind Regards,

Cameron

Dear Friendly Advice.

Many thanks for your feedback. My team have now completed a visit and spoken to staff working in the area.

Oesophageal motility studies are a clean procedure and as such staff and the associated equipment is not required to be sterile. Having visited the area today the Infection Prevention and Control Team are assured that equipment and processes followed in the room are in line with standards for these types of procedures. We would not expect staff completing these procedures to wear scrubs, uniforms are acceptable.

In relation to your query around bread and butter we have discussed preparation of food with the staff and have suggested a change to the current process that will mean no food is prepared in the area going forward. To reassure you, the butter is stored in a refrigerator and only taken out when required.

We have also asked for a new desk to be ordered to compliment the new chairs.

Kind Regards

Emer
