Today I bought my very frail mother to surgery to have her ears syringed ready for a hospital appt on Monday 21May only to be told that the syringing machine was broken again, she had an appt in March at the hospital but again we had to cancel because the machine was broken. The receptionist told me today that they had phoned yesterday to tell her this but no call was received by her, ironic really because earlier this week a text message was sent to my mobile to confirm her appointment but nobody sent a message to my mobile to cancel! The receptionist also said you are no longer going to offer syringing, I note that Lakesides website says ’ that patients needs are at the heart of everything we do’ well I beg to differ.

I have now had to cancel her hospital appt for Monday 21st and make her another which is in JULY this is completely unacceptable. So we are now 4 months down the line with no progress for my 84 year old mother.

Thank you for your feedback, I am sorry to hear about the recent problems that you have experienced.

Unfortunately, the NHS has not offered an ear syringing service for some time.

Over the last few years we have tried hard to provide a limited service using existing equipment.

In keeping with many local practices we feel that we can longer provide this service safely and recently took the decision to stop providing the service.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause. There are a number of local non-NHS providers who can offer a similar service.

We understand that costs vary but and that charges are around £30.00.

The local providers that we are currently aware of include:-

Rutland Late Night Pharmacy in Oakham (01572) 723368

Wellhead Practice in Bourne (01778) 392832

Healthy Hearing in Peterborough (01733) 392910

We are not able to endorse the services of these companies and recommend that patients assess their terms and conditions prior to booking an appointment.

I am sorry for the impact that the change to this service had on your mother's hospital appointment and regret the additional inconvenience that this caused.
