"You could hear people in their appointments"

About: Highly Specialist Services / Specialist psychotherapy services

(as a service user),

I have recently embarked upon Psycotherapy and had cause to visit St. Georges for the first time.

The receptionist was very helpful and I liked the use of a tablet to collect the usual equalities data and also to help book me in and provide some details on my mood etc no doubt to assist the therapist.  That said, I trust other means are available for those unable and/or not wanting to use IT?

My main point though, is to comment on the rooms that adjoin the reception area (a friend had warned me about these). These rooms were obviously being used to conduct appointments within - confirmed on seeing people and staff entering and exiting.   I felt awkward sat in reception, as I could hear EVERY word that was being said in one of these rooms - words spoken by people and staff in THEIR appointments.
I was by no means earwigging, but you cannot turn your hearing off to suit - moving to another seat made no difference at all.  I wouldn't like to think people outside could hear everything I might potentially be sharing during the course of my appointments - deeply personal and upsetting stuff.  Thankfully I was taken upstairs for my appointment(s), but was prepared to say I did not want to go into one of the rooms by the reception area.

First of all I am pleased that you found our receptionist very helpful and that you liked the use of the tablet to collect data and book appointments etc. I will ensure that your comments are passed onto the appropriate staff members. This is a recent IT development for the service but we do also have a paper copy that some clients do choose to use and also if they don’t wish to compete the questionnaire that would also be individual choice.

Thank you for bringing the issues of the rooms adjoining the reception area to our attention. Ensuring confidentiality for those people that use our services is taken extremely seriously by our teams, and so we closed 2 of the rooms in that area with immediate effect. The clinical activity that was due to be undertaken there has been moved to other areas of the building until such time as we are able to make changes to the rooms that will make them acceptable for clinical usage. Please accept our apologies for the distress that this has caused and thank you for raising your concerns so that we have an opportunity to improve the service area.
