"Main Entrance is filthy"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (London)

The main entrance to the hospital is a disgrace. The entrance is occupied by smokers, despite the larger than life no-smoking signs, including patients on drips and with catheter bags. Even more disappointing is staff members who have escorted patients as far as the entrance so that they can smoke. Health education?

The floor is littered with cigarette ends as are the bins, and is a dirty, smelly introduction to a hospital which otherwise maintains good standards of cleanliness.

Smoking in public areas has been illegal for over 5 years, and smoking in healthcare settings, community and in-patient has been banned for all sorts of good reasons. There are fines for not complying with these laws.

I have respiratory problems, as do many other people entering to attend appointments.

The Trust has a responsibility to manage this issue, or at least take responsibility to keep the environment clean. It also has a responsibility to protect patients' health by making sure everything possible has been done to help them maintain good health. How has this been allowed to happen, and why is nothing done about it?

Dear Jo

Thank you for your comments. I am sorry to learn of the effect that someone’s smoke had on you.

Smoking within the hospital grounds has been an issue the Trust has struggled to solve for many years.

Wherever possible, the security team during their patrols speak to smokers and advise them that the site is a no smoking site. The matter is being addressed at both sites and work is ongoing to ensure all staff take responsibility to challenge smokers.

I have passed on your comments to the area managing the front of the hospital so they can be aware of the issue and take the appropriate action.

If you would like your concerns investigated further and receive a formal response please contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on 020 8836 4592.

Kind regards

Patient Experience Team
