"3 hour wait for prescription!"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Accident and emergency

Arrived at A&E children’s department at 7 am There were no other patients so was seen after a few minutes by triage nurse who informed up prescription for antibiotics was needed. No doctor was available for that department till 10 am so we waited for doctor to come over from adult

A&E, we waited and we waited. At one time there were 8 members of staff all at reception talking . Time after time we asked how much longer , we were told we were next , 3 hrs later still not been seen . My granddaughter was bought in with infected blister that was grey & blk swollen on foot followed by swelling & rash as well as sickness, her face red & blotchy.. we left hospital with no prescription as we had run out of money for parking . The staff were most unhelpful. How does it take over 3 hrs to give a child antibiotics. I was informed your hospital had bad reviews & now I have witnessed the poor service, I never myself want to attend your hospital.

Dear M Newberry,

That is a long time to wait for a child who will have been in distress and I am sorry you had this experience, it is also clear to me that we could have communicated much better to you. Any child who is over 6 months would not be seen by a paediatrician unless specifically referred.

Any child who comes in requiring any form of medication would need to be seen by doctors from the Emergency Department to prescribe antibiotics and so as she would be one of the patients to be seen by a doctor from the Emergency Department (ED), this is why you would have experienced this delay, as clearly a large number of patients are seen in the main ED.

Please accept my apologies if this was not communicated and please do make further contact if you have any other questions. You can email the Patient Experience Team at pals@pah.nhs.uk.
