"Excellent level of care"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Our daughter had an accident at the weekend.  Her arm was swollen around the elbow so we took her to A and E at Hairmyres hospital.  After a bit of a wait, we were seen by a triage nurse who showed us straight through to minor injuries.  Here, our daughter was assessed, had x-rays which showed that her elbow was broken, had a cast put on and then had more x-rays to check the position for healing.  All of this was done extremely efficiently and every member of staff who we saw was friendly and professional and the communication of what was to happen next was excellent.

We were told that we would receive a call from Wishaw hospital the next morning once the x-rays had been reviewed.  However, we actually received a call that evening at around 11pm from the Royal Hospital for Children.  They enquired as to how she was doing and told us that they had already reviewed our daughter's x-rays and felt she was borderline for needing further treatment.  The following morning we got a further call from the RHC to ask us to bring our daughter in the next day at 7.30am to Ward 1A.  Within 10 minutes of getting off the phone to them, Hairmyres called to check we had received the call and asked how our daughter was doing.

When we arrived at Ward 1A, it was explained to us what would happen.  Our daughter would need a general anaesthetic so that her elbow could be further assessed by arthrogram, the fracture reduced and pins put in to keep it in the best position to heal.  This was a really worrying time for us but the staff who dealt with us helped make the whole experience that bit better.  Again, everyone was friendly, professional and made sure that we were well informed and reassured at every step.

We have been thoroughly impressed by the excellent level of care that we have received from all concerned in helping our daughter.  The communication between the hospitals and with ourselves has been excellent.

Dear JT1204

Thank you for taking the time to share details of the care your daughter received during her recent visit to the emergency department. It must have been a very worrying and difficult time for you and I am glad to hear that you felt you received excellent communication. It is really important to hear feedback and learn from events and your positive comments will be shared with the wider team.

It can be a challenge to ensure optimum communication is maintained when different specialties and hospitals are involved and it is therefore reassuring to hear that it was effective for you.

I hope that your daughter is recovering well from her injury and wish both you and your daughter best wishes for the future. Thank you again for sharing your experience with us especially at such a stressful time.

Hoping your daughter has a speedy recovery

Kind regards

Lise

Dear JT104

Thank you for sharing your feedback on the Care Opinion site.

This must have been a very worrying time for you and your daughter. It is great to hear that you felt cared for, supported and communicated with at all times. It must become all the more difficult when you have to travel outwith your local hospital and receive care from a number of different teams across 2 hospitals. Your feedback highlights that communications between our teams at Hairmyres, the RHC and, more importantly for you, worked well and allowed your daughter to receive her treatment quickly and effectively.

Your kind words will be shared with our teams in Theatres and Ward 1a and I know they will be delighted to receive this.

I hope your daughter is recovering well at home now.

Best wishes

Pam
