"Waiting time for cataract procedure"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

Having been referred way back in December 2017 by my optician, I never expected that I'd have to wait until March 2018 to be assessed by medical staff, then sent a letter telling me I was eligible for the 12 week Treatment Time Guarantee which offered an admission date for treatment by early June 2018, then on a call in May 2018, by me to the cataract referral office in Hairmyres to see what is happening, they told me that this is purely a Scottish Government guarantee and a June operation was not going to happen. They tell me it's more than likely that it will be 24 weeks, from March, which is going to be sometime at the end of August 2018, and even then it will first be for pre-assessment before the operation,so could be into September.

We're talking nearly 10 months after initial referral by my optician, and all the time my eyesight is getting worse.

The promised guarantee states - we should offer you an admission date for treatment on or before - they should, but they didn't.

This is not healthcare at its best.

I've been a cardiac patient in Hairmyres recently and experienced the best care I could have ever asked for in the cardiac unit and rehab, and I'm sure the opthalmology staff are similarly professional and caring, it's the management who I think need to act on this problem and offer Hairmyres patients a far better service, and stop sending patients letters with unachievable promises of treatment.

Dear Glasgow,

I'm really sorry to read of the frustrating experience that you are having awaiting your cataract surgery. Unfortunately we are not currently able to meet the 12 week Treatment Time Guarantee for this operation. We continue to make a number of changes to help address this. Most recently we have employed highly specialised optometrists who can assess patients for surgery, meaning consultant time can be freed up for other duties, we have recruited additional consultant staff and made a substantial investment in theatre equipment to allow cataract operations to be carried out in a greater number of operating theatres throughout Lanarkshire.

It will take time before the impact of these improvements is reflected in the waiting times for our patients so I do appreciate that explanation above may do little to make your wait for treatment any easier.

If you would like me to look into any of the specifics of your situation then I would be happy to do this. You can contact my secretary, Aileen, on 01355 584488 to pass on your details.

Cameron
