My father was admitted to McCulloch, with a chronic, challenging disease requiring complex medical and nursing care. The nurses were professional, knowledgable and cared deeply about preserving my fathers dignity, health and welfare. The specialist and discharge teams involved the family in every step: managing his needs, ensuring his safety and acting as advocates in his continuing care. I will never forget the morning the nursing and medical teams successfully resuscitated my father and supported him and the family as he made a remarkable recovery. They gave the family more time to at first say goodbye and then as he gained strength, prepare for his successful discharge. We underwent a roller coaster of emotions that day and their support, even entertaining my niece whilst we gathered the family for what we thought was his final journey, was overwhelming. The nurses were operating with inadequate resources, poor working conditions and sub standard facilities but still delivered brilliant, patient centred care for my dad and his family.
