"Thankyou for making a difficult time much easier"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

I had been experiencing haematuria and left sided pain since Tuesday. I went to my GP who gave antibiotics as a precaution incase of infection and kept an eye on things. I had to make an appointment with her yesterday as things hadn’t improved and that was when she made the decision to send me up to A& E at the Royal Infirmary to be seen.

My GP felt this would be sensible due to levels of pain and no progress in my care under Urology. I’ve been waiting to see a Urologist but unfortunately this hasn’t happened and all my care has been done through nurses talking on the phone to the consultant and not a face to face appointment. I’m 20 years old and experiencing all these bladder issues and nobody can tell me what is actually going on, it’s honestly frustrating.

I arrived in A& E hoping I could be helped. The receptionists were lovely. I was taken through to a cubicle by a nurse called Sylvia who was so kind and she done my obs and bloods and we chatted about how things had been the last couple of weeks. I didn’t wait long at all for the blood results to come back and was then seen by a doctor. I wish I could remember his name as he was so kind and understanding. He gave me choices in my care and involved me in what I wanted to happen. I was then offered pain relief and this was given to me straight away. I was then given information about kidney stones and renal colic and given advice about managing at home, medication and self care advice.

Thanks to the staff in A& E for making a difficult time much easier. Hopefully now I’m on the road to recovery!
