"Waiting on a trolley."

About: University Hospital (Coventry) / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I attended my local Emergency Department after experiencing FAST symptoms. I waited many hours to be triaged. I was then assessed by an excellent junior doctor who confirmed I’d probably experienced a stroke.

There was no Stroke specialist on duty 'til morning, so I was moved to a corridor near automatic doors to wait. I was able to move and walk but still had to wait on the trolley in the corridor. It was cold, draughty and noisy. I was able to go to the toilet independently and verbalise my needs but most of the patients near me couldn’t. Nobody was offered a drink until early morning.

Nobody was assisted to reposition or offered pressure relieving equipment. My back was painful for weeks afterwards. Agency staff were on hand but were only interested in checking people’s observations, not in their general well-being. On the positive side, all the nurses and healthcare assistants were pleasant and polite and smiled even though they were so busy.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion. I was very disappointed to hear about your experience in our Emergency Department, and would like to apologise, as this is not the standard of care that we aim to provide.

I have passed on your comments to the Emergency Department. However, due to the seriousness of the issues you have raised, I would urge you to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team on feedback@uhcw.nhs.uk or on 0800 028 4203. They can then look into your concerns in more detail.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, we appreciate all comments both positive and negative, as it helps us to better understand our patients’ needs and to continually improve.
