"Unsympathetic Doctor"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as the patient),

Motherwell Health Centre

I visited my doctor multiple times at the beginning of 2018 regarding a reoccurring sore throat that I could not get rid of. When addressing this issue to them I got the reply “you live in Scotland what do you expect “ when it was an issue that was causing me great pain and causing me to miss out on school on certain occasions. Finally after many trips to them and getting nowhere my mother offered to come with me this time and we got given the same answer even although it’s several months later and the pain is still there. We moved on from that situation and I moved on to some more personal issues I had been having such as weight, hormones etc

When the doctor asked what sort of exercise I had been doing and I replied a lot of waking they then continued to laugh in my face and said “ahah walking will do nothing for you” this made me feel very angry and uncomfortable and I explained to them I do not like to take part in the gym as I am very self conscious and anxious because of my weight. They then in a very unpleasant tone said well you can’t want to change that much I cannot make you change and your hormone and sweating at night will just be because of your weight.

The doctor was very unsympathetic and not understanding at all as this was an issue I was very embarrassed about and felt nervous bringing it up and they have made me feel awful about myself - even worse than before and I went to them for help with the situation and now I feel 10x worse as I do not want to address this situation anymore as of their reaction tone and how unserious they took my problem I hope to take this complaint further but as of now I will make sure I will not get this doctor again and if that’s an issue I will be moving away from the heath centre for good!

Dear Jess1234,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience through Care Opinion. Firstly, please accept my apology for the way you were spoken to during the consultations and the impact that this has had on you; I'm sure this wasn't the doctor's intention and I will ensure your feedback is shared with them for reflection and learning.

It's good that you are seeking help and support with personal issues. Don't worry, there are lots of people that don't like to use the gym, there are many activities that you can do to increase your physical exercise. I'm sure the staff at the Health Centre will be able to signpost you to services and self-help resources that you will be able to use.

Please don't give up on trying to address any issues you may have, you can ask to see a different doctor and the nurse may also be able to help you. You might find some helpful information in the Healthy Living section of the NHS Lanarkshire website http://www.nhslanarkshire.org.uk/HealthyLiving/Pages/default.aspx and the

NHSinform website https://www.nhsinform.scot/

We can share your feedback with the staff for reflection and learning but we'd need you to provide some more detail. Please contact the Patient Affairs Team if you feel able to; you can call on Tel No:01698 858321 or e-mail PatientAffairs.PrimaryCare@Lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Kind regards

Rick
