"Nowhere to 'park' a wheelchair in the waiting..."

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital / General surgery

I escorted a relative, who is a wheelchair user, to the Day surgery unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

At Day surgery Reception, there are plenty of chairs but I had to 'park' the wheelchair in the children's play area which was the only open space available.

The door from the Reception area to the waiting area is not self-opening and I had to ask a painter who was working nearby to hold it open for me.

This was the only department we dealt with but the same problem may exist in others.

Could I suggest that you arrange for a 'mystery shopper' in a wheelchair to visit the various hospital departments and report back on the arrangements for access and waiting?

Thank you for posting your feedback regarding your difficult experience when tried to park a wheelchair at the Day Surgery reception, when you attended with your relative who is a wheelchair user.

I was sorry to read that the childrens' play area was the only open space available for you to use.

I have flagged your message to the Facilities Manager as well as the Patient Experience Manager who will take your feedback about a mystery shopper forward.

There is also our DisabledGo access guide that is available on line with details of the different venues and access to disabled users. These were produced using wheelchair users and were conducted across all of our sites. Your feedback will also be forwarded to them at a later date to improve patients’ experience.
