"The midwives went above and beyond"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

Whilst in the maternity unit at Oldham hospital, myself & my partner came into hospital due to my diabetes being out of control with high sugars, whilst in the maternity Antenatal Unit I have to say that the midwives were extremely professional and very approachable, even went above and beyond to help my partner as well as myself as he had hurt his foot, providing him a bed and helping him get some painkillers from the shop. Lovely clean ward.

Negatives are that it can be very noisy in the ward with the call bells and door buzzer doing a lot. The windows in my room were unfortunately broken.

The midwives all in all were amazing but I feel they would benefit from further training in Type 1 diabetes and carb counting as the first day I arrived I was told off for eating toast which the dietitian said I could and still can eat anything I require as long as I take the correct amount of insulin and didn't really know when to check my sugars until this was discussed with my partner.

This in my opinion is a small training issue and in no way the midwives' issue.

All in all, a big thank you to all the wonderful members of staff.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of our Antenatal Ward. It is a pleasure to hear from women that have found our midwives to be very professional and approachable. This is because we always strive to maintain a high standard of care. In addition it is important to us that our wards are kept clean so I am pleased to learn that you found this to be the case during your stay. Please accept our apologies if you were caused any distress by the noise on the unit. We have been trialling new visitors hours and a Birth Companion charter which will hopefully address some of your concerns. I have shared your comments with our Diabetes Specialist Midwife and our Practice Education Midwife regarding extra training for our teams regarding Type 1 diabetes. I will update this story if any changes are made.

Once again thank you for your story

Kind Regards
