"My experience of treatment for a neuroma"

About: Biggart Hospital / Chiropody/Podiatry General practices in Ayrshire & Arran University Hospital Ayr / Day Surgery University Hospital Ayr / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

My treatment started when I went to my GP Dr. Hunter of Barns Medical Practice in Ayr. He referred me to Podiatry Services at the Biggart Hospital in Prestwick. I was given an appointment fairly quickly. The Podiatrist, Mr MacIntyre carefully examined my foot and recommended a regimen of exercises and made new insoles for my shoes. After a series of follow up appointments he referred me to Irvine Central for a scan where I was diagnosed with a small neuroma.

Having explained various non invasive options he gave me a cortisone injection which proved ineffectual. After discussing other options Mr MacIntyre referred me to the orthopaedic department at Ayr Hospital. I was thoroughly examined by Mr Obi. He carefully explained advantages and possible side effects of surgery. I indicated that I would be happy to have as early a date for surgery as possible, including possible cancellations. In the event from first appointment with Mr Obi to the date of surgery was less than three weeks.

The nursing staff in the Day Surgery Unit were an example of I would consider thoroughly professional practise, combined with a courteous and friendly manner of dealing with their patients. The theatre staff were as professional, explaining their procedures and its impact, friendly and courteous as the rest of the staff at the hospital.

My sincere thanks to Mr Obi and all of his team. The same can be said of Mr Obi’s secretary. The consistency of that kind of professionalism, courtesy and friendly is something I believe only happens when team leaders set that priority and example. I am happy to say that from Dr. Hunter, Mr MacIntyre, the Podiatry Unit at Ayrshire Central Hospital the clinic staff and nursing staff of the Orthopaedics Department of Ayr Hospital and of Mr Obi, I have received the best that the NHS has to offer in Ayrshire and Arran. Thank you all, especially since it is in time for the golf season.
