"A&E visit"

About: George Eliot Hospital - Acute Services / Accident and emergency

I was first referred to the A&E by my GP on Monday because I had severe pain in my lower abdomen due to PID. They also suspected that it might be appendicitis so my GP also requested a surgical opinion and a scan. I was first seen by a gynaecologist who checked me, took a sample and told me that they will arrange an urgent scan, she said that she was not sure that I had PID. A surgeon also consulted me and ruled out appendicitis but told me that I most likely have PID because the region was swollen and that they should start me on antibiotics. However, after almost 5 hours of staying in the hospital they sent me home with only painkillers and they promised that the scan will be booked shortly. After another 2 days of agony (the painkillers did not work) I went to my surgery again and they sent me back to the A&E in the hope that they will give me the treatment I need. I was again seen by the same gynaecologist who told me that they could not do anything for me until they had the results from my scan which was booked a week later, so I was supposed to bear the pain another week, I thought this was unacceptable and then she told me that I should've gone to the GUM clinic, which she did not mention the last time she consulted me. Finally, I was advised to go home and come back a week later for the scan. Fortunately, I took the initiative to go to the GUM clinic that day and they promptly diagnosed me and gave me treatment. The surgeons I have met were all very professional and tried to help me even though it was not their department, unfortunately the two encounters with the gynaecologist left me very disappointed that this problem was not resolved earlier.
