"Brusque manner"

About: Wythenshawe Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I was recently sent to A and E by the out of hours GP service. I was discharged after being seen the following morning by a neurologist and the physiotherapist.

The neurologist said that if my condition worsened I was to come straight back. Leaving aside any other issues, my complaint is about the consultant who I met before the neurologist who said in a brusque fashion that I 'should not be in an acute hospital'. I can't remember their name and when I asked the junior doctor with them if they were an A and E consultant, I think they said that they weren't.   Maybe I am being oversensitive but I didn't care to be spoken to like that as if I was cluttering the place up.

I have been a reluctant but previously satisfied customer and have said so.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your experience at Manchester NHS Foundation Trust Wythenshawe Site via the NHS Choices Website. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity for the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

The poor communication and professionalism that you reported to have experienced from the medical team in the Emergency Department is unacceptable, and does not reflect Manchester NHS Foundation Trust's values and behaviours. We apologise that the doctor who spoke with you was insensitive and left you feeling that like 'you were cluttering up the place'. Your comments have been passed onto the medical team so that they can be made aware of your experience. It is difficult to respond in full to your concerns without more detail but please be assured that the issues you have raised have been taken seriously and shared with the Emergency Department at the Wythenshawe site. If you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison service on 0161 291 5600 or by emailing pls@mft.nhs.uk, quoting Reference no. PO18/0004, and they will be able to discuss this with you.
