"Mixed experiences of maxillofacial dept"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Oral and maxillofacial surgery

(as the patient),

I had a consultation with an oral surgeon near the beginning of 2018. The surgeon was very professional and very informative. I did talk to him about being nervous about having a third molar extracted. Unfortunately after leaving the consultants room a dental nurse had asked the surgeon, who was walking behind me, "was he a faffer?". I was only a few steps away from the door but couldn't hear the response.

Recently I had my third molar extracted by a different surgeon. Very professional gentleman and very good at his job. I felt that he was very rough giving the anaesthesia, to the point that my body had gone into shock. Sweating, dizzy, very hot and feeling very unwell immediately after the injection. I am fine with having injections normally but this experience left me both anxious and disappointed from the NHS treatment I received.

On a quick side note, the surgeon had mentioned that the extraction might break the tooth next to third molar. If it did I would have to go back to my normal dentist to have it repaired. I believe if that an accidental break had occurred from the direct action  of the extraction then the surgeon would be left responsible to repair it and not left for me to pay for the repair.

Thank you for your time.

Dear MaxillofacialMax

Many thanks for taking the time to get in touch, it is important that our patients get in touch to tell us about there experiences.

I was disappointed to hear that your experience was not a more positive one for you. The behaviours you have describe are not what we expect of our staff and for this I would like to pass on my most sincere apologies.

I wonder if I could ask you to get in touch with me, as I would like the opportunity to talk with you about your experience and discuss with you the concerns you raised, you can contact me on 01324 566660 or alternatively you can email me p.marland@nhs.net
