"I am very disappointed"

About: Wansbeck Hospital / Walk-in service

(as the patient),

I went straight from work to the urgent care centre at Wansbeck as my foot was extremely painful, a pain that has gradually got worse over the last 3 months. After an hour I was called to see the triage nurse. As soon as I started telling them about my foot they interrupted me and said there was nothing they could do about long term conditions.

When I explained about the acute pain they said there was no point in me staying any way as there wouldn’t be a doctor to see me after 5. When I questioned this they got very agitated and said that they would go through the motions of writing down what I was saying but nothing would be done. Very unprofessional. They didn’t even look at my foot let alone examine it, which I found extraordinarily rude. They showed no empathy or care at all. I was then told to wait back in the waiting room.

Eventually another triage nurse came out, this time a senior staff member. They were more pleasant but was also just going through the motions with no intention of letting me see a doctor or have an x Ray. They did examine my foot but didn’t actually look at, or touch the underside of my foot which is where the problem is. They touched my shin, ankle and top of my foot then told me to see my GP. I burst into tears when I first started telling them my problem and also told them about the poor manner of her colleague but I got no response. As the senior nurse I thought they might have been sympathetic but they were not.

As someone who would rarely use the urgent care centre available I am very disappointed. The first nurse showed no care or attention to a patient in crisis.

Dear limayq33,

I am sorry that you have felt so let down by the service. Firstly I sincerely hope you have since managed to seek help for your painful foot? I am disappointed to read about your experience and I would like the chance to look into this further. Please could you email us at Patient.Experience@nhct.nhs.uk with your full name, date of birth and address. This will allow us to see the exact date and time of your visit to our urgent care centre and learn more and pinpoint the members of staff on duty at the time. In the meantime I will forward your review to the team in Urgent care so the issues you have raised can be highlighted straight away.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Annie Laverty - Chief Experience Officer
