I visited the surgery with mastitis as a result of breastfeeding which later developed into a breast abscess. After eventually being referred to the hospital, I was told that this was a serious condition which could have caused a severe infection. The doctor I saw was dismissive and unhelpful . They told me that I was 'lucky to be breastfeeding at all'
They told me to take some antibiotics and that it would be fine - and if I was still having problems, to stop breastfeeding. I went away in pain and upset. I didn't want to stop breastfeeding. My baby was only a few months old at the time. The doctor telephoned me later on to say they were referring me to the hospital - where I saw a kind and helpful consultant who was able to help me continue breastfeeding as I'd wanted to.
It has taken me a while to get round to posting this review - but I'm doing so now because this is really important. Support women who want to breastfeed. Don't put someone else in that position, like I was. It's unfair, unprofessional and it's wrong.
