"Daughter taken ill during the red weather warning"

About: Borders General Hospital / Paediatrics (Ward 15) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter took ill on Wednesday evening with a tummy bug. She is Type 1 diabetic, she started vomiting about 9pm and continued through the night. I rang into Ward 15 for advice and spoke to one of the Nurses, Emma I think her name was. I was reassured and told to ring back if any problems.

On Thursday morning my daughter was deteriorating so I rang in again and spoke to Dr Irving who advised that I should get her to hospital if I could. I explained that we lived outside Morebattle and we were totally blocked in. I was told to ring for an ambulance by dialling 999. The ambulance eventually got to us after having to be dug out by the plough as he was stuck on softlaw heights. The paramedics were so caring, Rob and Christine from Kelso.

We got to the BGH about 1.30pm and we’re met by Richard, he was amazing, very sympathetic. The Dr on call was called Rod and was very gentle with my daughter when he had to insert a canula. We had a phone call from Angela, my daughter's diabetic nurse to see if we were ok. Overnight it was Kirsten and Emma making sure she was ok and again they were amazing! Yesterday we had Joanna and nurse practitioner Karen looking after us. Sandra, my daughter's other diabetic nurse rang in also to see how things were.  We had a surprise visit from Dr Stephen which made our day 😊

Overnight last night it was Richard again and this morning Leanne was looking after us until we were discharged at lunchtime. Leanne was our nurse when my daughter was first diagnosed nearly 6 years ago and she could remember her!

I just want all the people here I’ve mentioned to be recognised, all of them I can’t thank enough for taking good care of my daughter. People don’t give the NHS enough credit! These guys are heroes!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. This recent weather has certainly been challenging and it sounds as though your journey into the Borders General Hospital was not straight forward. I shall share your kind comments with those you have been mentioned.

Dear Zoesmum,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write about you and your daughters story. It can be very worrying when a child is unwell, particularly when it is your child. That is without even mentioning the truly challenging weather we experienced as well. I do hope that your daughter is on the way to a full recovery and pass on the wishes of the service to her.

Thank you for your kind words about our crew. I am happy to read that they were as professional and as caring as we would expect. It is also encouraging to hear about the support that they were given from the hard workers that have been battling the elements throughout the red warning without whom, I am sure, there would have been some very bad situations.

If you would like, I can pass on this feedback to the crew and their manager so they know how appreciative you are and that your daughter is now home with her mum. In order to do this you can email scotamb.feedback@nhs.net and I will need your daughters name, the address we attended, the date we attended and a rough time if possible.

I wish you and your family all the best in the future!

Kind Regards

Alan
