"Making progress with lifelong severe eczema"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Dermatology

(as the patient),

I have had bad eczema since birth and had therefore been going to the dermatology department since then, but nothing seemed to work,UV light treatment, patch testing and immuno-suppressants yielded no significant results, I am now 20, and last year saw Nicola at the Grantham Hospital Dermatology department for the first time, she immediately took a different approach to the treatment of my skin, explaining how to properly apply ointments and creams to avoid blocking hair follicles, which can lead to spots, of which I'd never been informed of prior and also explaining comprehensively how sometimes scratching can be habitual and that I could retrain myself to choose an action to do with my hands whenever I felt the urge to scratch, over time this helped remove the habit of scratching when I wasn't feeling itchy, for example when anxious, excited etc. This coupled with her prescribing a new ointment that I could both moisturise with and use in conjunction with certain soaps, has meant my skin has never looked better, I feel as normal as I can be, I never thought I'd be able to consistently achieve these kind of results month after month, and have bumped into friends who could barely recognise me due to the difference. She was warm and approachable and clearly eager to help and passionate about doing so, she was genuinely excited to see my progress and I cannot be more grateful.
