"Hip replacement"

About: Guy's Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I was diagnosed with requiring a hip replacement whilst a member of the emergency services. I was due to retire but pain from my hip made that decision for me, as my local hospital (west middx) refused to operate for nearly 4 years. Stipulating I was too young!! I was recommended to a particular consultant at Guys by my brother. The orthopaedic department were brilliant from start to finish! Although initially the hospital tried to delay my op stating I suffered from sleep apnoea (don't we all, to some degree) the operation went ahead in July last year. Obviously it was a scary time, but all the staff made me feel really at ease, even the anaesthetist was making me laugh as I went under. I apparently came round very quickly and I was up and walking that afternoon. Everyone from the cleaners to the specialists were superb. the nursing staff couldn't do enough. Due to obvious Government cutbacks the staff work relentlessly, but still with a smile on their face! If I were to point out some negative points, the food was pretty poor but that's not the fault of the catering staff (who were lovely too) it obviously had to be microwaved. But a nice cup of tea was always welcome. I opted for taking transport home, sadly from start to finish it took 5 hours, I know a lot of people have to use this service so make sure you have a book and bottle of water. Apart from these minor niggles, I can't thank all the staff enough! We always hear negatives but Guy's obviously employ some fantastic people! Thank you to all of you that helped me I wish I could remember your names!

Thank you for your feedback. We are really pleased to hear that you felt so well cared for throughout your time with us. It is good to know that each member of the team both clinical and non clinical contributed to this. We would like to apologise for the problems that you experienced with your hospital transport home. We are aware that we do have problems with this service and unfortunately some patients are experiencing significant delays. We are working with our transport provider to try and improve this. We will share your feedback with the teams involved.
