"Polite and helpful staff but slow service for..."

About: The Maidstone Hospital / Accident and emergency

Went to A&E in the early hours of the morning because my 23 month old seemed to be struggling to breathe in his sleep and had a barking cough. The same thing happened 4 weeks ago and when we got to (a different) hospital we were told he had Croup so I knew instantly that these were the exact same symptoms. Considering it was 3.30am and the A&E was empty I was disappointed at how long we were waiting and that we got discharged at 7.30am. I assumed that children as young as my child (under 2 years) would be prioritised and dealt with as soon as possible, especially as it was clear that he had Croup again and that he just needed the dose of steroid to make him better so that we could return home. Other that that the staff were very polite and made my son feel comfortable when doing their checks. So overall great staff just a very slow service.

Thank you for writing about your experience at Maidstone Hospital's Accident and Emergency department. All patients are clinically prioritised when they arrive in the department which could mean that patients are not seen chronologically due to the nature of other emergencies presenting. We hope that your son is now recovered. With kind regards, the PALS team.
