Earlier this month, my 93-year-old mum-in-law fell down in her home and hit her head. She called me at work and I rushed over to find her sitting up and conscious but with a very deep, wide, bleeding gash on the top of her head. I called 999 for an ambulance immediately.
Within five minutes a South Western Ambulance arrived. The two paramedics, Kirk and Louise (Team 7404) were brilliant! The were calm, efficient and very reassuring. They quickly and thoroughly assessed her condition, stabilised her and took us both to Southmead Hospital's A&E, where we were seen almost immediately.
The team at Southmead was equally impressive. The nursing staff were very attentive, the facilities were immaculate and everyone was extremely kind. Dr Cole, the doctor who treated her, was gentle and thorough, explaining everything as he went along. My mum-in-law's head wound required nine stitches, and she was rather bruised, but had no other significant injuries. Dr Cole also diagnosed her with a urinary tract infection, for which he prescribed a short course of antibiotics, and arranged for an occupational therapist's assessment. Having received these and being deemed well enough to go home, we were discharged within only a few hours, much to my mum-in-law's relief.
The following day the hospital's occupational therapist visited her at home, assessed her mobility and advised on additional support that could be beneficial for her.
The entire medical team involved in her care were truly dedicated and did an amazing job. We could not have asked for better. Thank you so very much, everyone!
"Truly dedicated team"
