"Staff/Public lifts and finding our way about"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow

(as a relative),

We once again visited a relative at the new hospital in Ward 6D however the story isn't about the ward, the staff there were incredible, caring and very attentive.

The issue comes with the lifts in the atrium on the ground floor, 'C lifts' I believe they are called. Myself and my two young daughters walked into the lift lobby only to be told by a member of staff in a green top that we would not be allowed to use these lifts as they are for patient transfer and staff usage. This was a surprise to us and we don't blame the person who informed us of this as she was polite and explained she's required to tell members of the public that they are in a staff only area and for reasons to do with infection control and patient dignity we had to use visitors lifts.

Our issue is with the complete and total lack of signage on the 'C lifts' lobby entrance to tell people that the area is 'Staff Only'. Walking through the double doors we didn't see any signs or notices (even on the doors themselves which were propped open) that the area was restricted.

This really should be improved and signs should be placed as your staff could appear to be in danger if someone objects to being told which lifts to use, placing signs will also help people visitors get where they need to go without incident.

Dear MartinS,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. I am pleased that your interaction with the staff member was courteous and that they took the time to explain why these lifts were not for public use. However, I am sorry that you felt a lack of signage had resulted in you finding yourself in a restricted area. I will pass your feedback to my colleagues in facilities for them to reflect on and consider.

I will also pass on your kind words to the staff of Ward 6D who I am sure will be delighted to hear your experience of them.

Kind regards

Julie

Update posted by MartinS (a relative)

Unfortunately when visiting again this morning we found out that nothing had been done with this, with other visitors still using these lifts and no signage anywhere near the doors making it clear that the area is off limits to the public or visitors like us. We spoke to a member of staff who told us she had complained about this too and that this is a common problem with the staff and patient transfer lifts. We were also told that the doors don't even lock, meaning anyone without an ID pass can use them. Appreciate the hospital has bigger issues but we've been told this has been the case here for years now.
