"Unfriendly officious receptionist."

About: Southmead Hospital

I checked in downstairs as usual prior to proceeding to gate 19 as directed by the machine.

Upon arriving at the gate the receptionist called across the room to me that despite checking in downstairs I also had to check in with them.

I pointed out that on prior occasions the reception desk had not even been manned but the receptionist became very officious and quite rude.

The receptionist shouted my date of birth and that I was there for a CT scan so that the entire room was able to hear them, unbelievably indiscreet. The receptionist (I am not allowed to mention gender) appeared to have no understanding whatsoever that I was there for a stressful appointment.

There was, as usual, no water provided despite my appointment letter saying that I should drink a litre prior to the scan.

The radiographers are great, but this department on the whole is cold and unfriendly.

Why have an expensive checking in system (which usually works) and then waste money on a poor receptionist? A warmer, more human touch is badly needed here.

Dear Ms James,

Thank you for your feedback, it is very sad to hear that you have had such a poor experience when you attended for your CT scan.

Please be assured that your comments have been fed back to the department concerned so that they are aware of your experience, and this will be shared with the reception staff.

Clearly the role of the receptionist is to be efficient in getting patients to their appointments, and to have an empathy that people are often worried and concerned about attending an appointment.

I am sorry that on this occasion we failed to provide the service that should be expected.

Thank you again for your comments.

Yours sincerely, Sue Needs, Deputy Advice & Complaints Team Manager
