"My friend needs urgent support with their mental health"

About: Northern General Hospital Sheffield Health & Social Care NHS Foundation Trust

(as a friend),

I am writing urgently on behalf of a friend who is having a current and serious mental health crisis, which I do not think is being properly addressed.

My friend took an overdose and was seen at the Northern General by the medical team, but not given a psychiatric assessment. I believe my friend is at serious risk and poses a danger to themself.

My friend has been attempting to access mental health support for over a year, for increasingly severe problems with their health. My friend has been diagnosed with anxiety, PTSD and Borderline Personality Disorder.

My friend was assessed at Argyll house who referred them to Sidney Street for drug and alcohol support. They are on the waiting list for St George’s Specialist Psychotherapy Service to receive tertiary level treatment, but has been told they won’t be seen for a year. In the meantime, my friend is being seen by private provider Share Psychotherapy, to fill the gap in service provision from your trust. However, from what I can see this service is not sufficient for my friend's level of need.

My friend is being seen by the substance misuse services. However, my friend's primary issue is one of mental health and they have used alcohol and drugs as a way to manage that. My friend needs urgent support with their mental health instead of being inappropriately shunted back to the substance misuse services.

I feel it was  irresponsible of the A&E staff to send my friend home without seeing the liaison psychiatry team at the Northern General. My friend needs an urgent assessment of need, a point of contact within the CMHT and a Care Plan.

I am worried about the future, and I am bringing this failure of care to your attention because I really hope that your services act appropriately from here on.  I hope for an urgent response to this posting with information on how to ensure my friend receives urgent and appropriate support.

Hi.

thank you for taking the time to share your concerns about your friend. I can see that you are very worried and I will look into this immediately

To help me locate who they are can you either reply with her initials and date of birth or email paul.Nicholson@shsc.nhs.uk with her name and address.

Can you first check with your friend that she is happy for you to share these details

I was sorry to read your post but pleased to see that Mr Nicholson has responded from Sheffield Health and Social Care NHSF Trust with regard to looking at your immediate concerns.

With regard to the A&E medical team not requesting a psychiatric assessment, we can look into this if you can provide personal information regarding your friend and if she consents for you to act as her representative in taking forward a complaint. If you and your friend feel that this is appropriate please could you contact our Patient Services Team on telephone number 0114 271 1976 or by email: pst@sth.nhs.uk

Thank you.

Update posted by sheff4571 (a friend)

Thank you for your responses.

Paul, I have sent you an email. I hope you can help us. I'll report back here on how our conversation progresses.

Deborah, I will talk to my friend and we will decide whether to contact you about the lack of an assessment. Our urgent priority is dealing with my friend's immediate mental health concerns.

I just wanted to update this story.

My email never received a supply. So that's disappointing.

The complaints email that I also sent this story to, first replied to ask if I wanted to make a formal complaint, and then when I replied saying we just desperately needed help, they said that the services [my friend] has been offered are considered to be appropriate services, however, there are considerate waiting lists for some of these services.

Seriously!? I have explained in detail that there are serious and ongoing concerns about the provision of care (with examples and details) - your reply? My friend has been offered the right care, but they'll have to wait for it.

I find this approach unhelpful, unsupportive and irresponsible. I'm not sure where else we turn now.

I am sorry that you and your friend have not been offered the help you need and that you have received a response to say your friend has been offered the right care but they will have to wait for it.

This does not sound as if the response came from the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as we do not provide mental health services. I would be very pleased if you could contact me to discuss this and clarify the position. My direct telephone number is 0114 271 1976. Kind regards
