I called emergency services as my 13 year old daughters health had progressively deteriorated over the weekend. Initially, I arranged a doctors appointment at the Greenock Health Centre, however she was unable to get out of bed because of the unbearable stomach pain. The ambulance team were very professional and transported her to Inverclyde Royal Hospital. My daughter was then examined by a doctor who concluded that gastroenteritis had caused the vomiting over the weekend and the stomach pains were just her muscles reacting to the violent retching. She was given an anti-sickness tablet followed by some water and a digestive biscuit. Then she was sent home.
The next 48 hours were horrendous for my daughter however, trusting in what the doctor said we waited for the pains to subside. On the third morning, I decided that the pain my daughter was having to endure wasn't quite right as there had been no reprieve from the agony she was in. I took her to the Greenock Health Centre and after examining her, the doctor said that they suspected my daughter had appendicitis and that I should take her immediately to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and they arranged for her admittance to children's A&E.
On arrival, the staff were very quick to conduct blood tests and also an ultrasound scan which confirmed the doctors diagnosis. Shortly afterwards, my 13 year old daughter endured a 3 hour operation to remove her appendix which had also perforated and allowed the infection to reach her pelvis and bowels. She is gradually improving, just lucky that I didn't wait any longer to question the first doctors diagnosis. If I had then I dread to think the outcome. I also know that the recuperation period for my daughter would not be as long as it will be if the doctor at Inverclyde Royal Hospital had taken our concerns seriously and acted accordingly. Considering the serious nature of untreated appendicitis, surely this should have been ruled out first and foremost, instead of taking a gamble on my daughters health and life!
I'd now appreciate answers to why this happened as I believe the doctor at Inverclyde Royal Hospital to be completely light-hearted about the situation and negligent in their actions, which caused a great deal of pain and distress.
