"Appointment letters"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Dermatology

(as the patient),

I had an appointment at the Dermatology Clinic; this was fine, the appointment went well and I was well cared for.

However, I was disappointed to receive a further appointment in January, this was not the cause of the disappointment. What dismayed me was that the letter was on two sheets of A4 paper single sided printing.

When the NHS is under pressure to cut costs, double sided printing must be a cost saver.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear microscopiumdh84,

I spoke to our Head of Medical Records and he asked me to thank you for raising this. He also wanted to say that there are various sources where letters are generated. While the main Medical Records printers have the facility to print on both sides of the paper (Duplex facility), some of the other areas do not. Your appointment notification letter was printed from a peripheral area which was not geared up to do so.

He continued to say

"I have reviewed the volumes and agreed to install duplex print facility to address this. In addition I can advise that as the organisation is replacing printers we are installing models that are capable of duplex print".

We also thought you would be interested to know that in an attempt to keep costs to a minimum we use low cost paper comprising of a high percentage of recycled material. The cost per page is 0.003 pence per sheet.

I am glad your Dermatology appointment went well and in due course, all the letters from NHS Ayrshire and Arran should be printed with printers with the Duplex facility.

Best wishes,

Eunice
