"feeling let down by Alwoodley Medical Centre"

About: Alwoodley Medical Centre

I have advanced breast cancer my husband is my carer and is 81 years old . I attend oncology for treatment every week , and District nurses come every other day and St .Gemmas palliative care team look after me for pain and sometimes getting my pain medication from the GP's is not easy . My Husband has seen 3 Doctors and has had to wait 3 weeks most times for an appointment and then waited a long time in the waiting room. I phoned today for an appointment for him knowing it would be in the New Year but could only get an all day telephone appointment in January ,unfortunately the cream the Dr has given him has made the soreness of his lips worse and I mentioned this to reception. He needs referral to a dermatologist ..We have never felt so let down ,unsupported and disappointed in a medical service , I know the GP's are busy and it is coming up to Christmas but some allowance should be made.

I am sorry to hear that you feel let down by the surgery. The reason we offer same day telephone consultations is exactly for situations such as yours. The GP would have contacted your husband and discussed the issues. If this is something which can be dealt with in a telephone call, it saves your husband a trip to the surgery. If the GP feels that your husband needs to be seen, they will offer him an appointment the same day. His medication and referral would have been dealt with at the same time.

I hope this helps to explain the reason for telephone consultations.
