"Water, water? nowhere! & loud bullying agency..."

About: Northampton General Hospital (Acute) / Accident and emergency

I am writing this because I want people to be aware of what to expect if you have the misfortune to be admitted to this dreadful place. Firstly the devil may care attitude of "some" nursing staff and Doctors is a disgrace! Dr's assume far too much when they grace you will 2 mins of their expensive time, rather than examine and diagnose. There is also a problem with mid range nursing staff on their own personal power trip when not gossiping and giggling with other staff.

If your in A&E expect a minimum of 6 hours to wait. Bring your own water! Its horrific to have to say this but all public patient water coolers have been removed! Forget drinks machines too, as they are mostly empty and not working. NHS trusts partnering with "Aquafund" under the guise of "water sustainability" are aiming to severely limit the fresh drinkable. potable water for all patients. While promoting that patients are given heavily fluorinated, luke warm undrinkable tap water. Always carry your GP prescription with you if you are prescribed a sleep medication, as you will not be given this on a ward without a valid GP prescription. If you have a history (however distant!) of mental health, addiction or are considered "troublesome" in any way, you will automatically be admitted to Collingtree ward, which is actually NGH's mental health unit (this fact is hidden from patients unless you examine literature which says "cognitive impairment") Where confused patients scream all night and your not allowed to walk or leave your bed without a nurse escort, unless you are granted permission. Other wards such as Willow, Rowan and Benham are also basic assessment units, giving the staff excuses for lax nursing. This is mostly mid range agency staff who could not care less. However, by far the most disturbing aspect of NGH is the serious lack of potable drinking water, which is "trust deliberate" because without drinking water how can sick patients ever hope to get better? Please take bottled water to your loved ones and make sure they are properly hydrated, as the staff at NGH and the "trust" at large, are not concerned, what so ever, about patient drinking water, insisting patients drink luke warm, unsafe tap water, which tastes like it came strait from the toilet! A copy of this complaint has been sent to the CQC.

We are extremely concerned to read about your experience as a patient in our hospital and are following up the issues you have raised with our nursing, medical and facilities teams.

For reasons of infection prevention and control we don't have public water coolers in the hospital and are currently exploring what alternatives are available that will meet our patients' needs and, importantly, keep them safe.

If you would like to discuss your concerns with us in more detail please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service either via email - pals@ngh.nhs.uk or telephone 01604 545784.
