It all started so well with the lead up to getting a date for my total knee replacement. A well oiled machine I thought, with appointments coming through very quickly and being seen on time, if not before time. I’m onto a winner here I thought! How wrong was I? My date for surgery followed shortly thereafter. I got my affairs in order and made arrangements for my care at home afterwards. My children had to find alternative childcare for my three grandchildren whilst I was out of action for approximately 6 weeks as I did the majority of childcare whilst they were at work. One of my daughters who lives abroad had booked me a flight to go out to them for Christmas so the heat could help with the healing process. All this done and the morning before I was due to go in, I got the dreaded phone call cancelling! I was so disappointed, but was given a new appointment there and then for 4 weeks later. All the above arrangements were made again, plus this time my son-in-law booked a week’s holiday to help out with the childcare aspect. I’d by now lost out on the heat seeking trip abroad with my other grandchildren due to recovery times. The new date for the operation came and no dreaded phone call in the morning to cancel. What a relief, so I packed my bag. By this time though, my pain had increased so much that I could barely walk and nighttime sleep was a distant memory, but my operation was going to take place, and I never thought I would ever look forward to this surgery as I’ve had it done before! This pain trumps the surgery pain and I couldn’t wait to have it gone. Wrong! That dreaded call came mid afternoon. I felt sick - another 4 weeks to wait. Will it happen then or be cancelled again? Believe it or not I’m at a loss for words. How can they continually do this with their cavalier attitude like we don’t count? I have all my life paid my NI and taxes and only seek medical help when I desperately need it. The whole thing is a joke and I’m so disappointed
