"Medication in Hospital"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Care of the Elderly (Wards 13-16)

(as a carer),

Reading the letter from patients family 9 months ago this practice of leaving medication on table for patients to take is still going on. Like that patient, my mother has dementia and requires me to give her medication at home.

On my morning visits to the ward I would find  medication on the floor or still in the small cup not taken. I also asked for certain medication if this could be given in liquid form and only when I was there to prompt the nurse this happened.

I did request to both Senior Nurse and Ward Doctor that a positive note be put on mums notes for the other nurses to follow such a simple thing. I did notice  that this was a common failing with the elderly patients with dementia.

Dear zza19,

Thank you for getting in touch, this is a practice we are absolutely against and I'd be grateful if you could telephone me to discuss in more detail so that I can investigate appropriately.

In the meantime, we will as an Older Persons Directorate and as a site team share your story at our safety meetings each morning & shift change to ensure all staff are reminded of their safe administration of medications policy along with professional responsibility regarding care.

My contact number is 01355 584026

Kind Regards

Gwen Macintyre

Dear zza19,

Thank you for spending time with me on the telephone this morning to explain in further detail your concerns.

My apologies for my delay in contacting you and my grateful thanks for your open honesty. It can be challenging to raise concerns and awareness for any subject but especially about your loved one's care.

I will be discussing all we spoke about with the senior staff on the Ward today to help debrief all staff on the correct procedures and to ensure we never lose sight of the patient and their families. I will also share this with the Senior Charge Nurses across our Older Persons Directorate as I believe this is extremely important.

Thank you for the praise you gave to both Claire and Simone along with other unnamed staff. It is heartening to know you and your mum received the level of care we would want all the time and for every patient from these staff members.

I hope you mum continues with better health with kind regards.

Gwen
