"Fantastic maternity care but very poor social support"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Maternity unit

(as the patient),

I am due to give birth soon at Larbert hospital. My community midwife has been amazing and the staff when I was in the ward were all really kind. I really have been well looked after.

When I first came to see my midwife she made a referral to the prebirth team for support for me due to personal issues which mean I might struggle with being a mum sometimes. I received an invite to a meeting.

When I got my letter I called and spoke to a midwife from the team. She was very kind to me on the phone and reassured me about the meeting.  She told me it would be someone else would holding the meeting, not her.

Sadly the person I saw was there was the complete opposite from the person I spoke to on the phone. Other workers I have also couldn't believe the meeting and how judgmental they were to me.

This person never did anything for me and put everything back on my community midwife. I just didn't see any point. I will never go along to anything like this again and have also told my friends not to either. I just hope I don't have to be looked after by this person.

Dear Mylie21star

Many thanks for the lovely feedback about your community midwife and staff in the ward. It is great to hear that they have all looked after you well.

I am sorry to hear that the pre-birth planning meeting did not go well and has left you feeling it was a waste of time. The purpose of a pre-birth meeting is to see how the pre-birth team, your midwifery team and staff from other areas can all work together to give you appropriate help and support. Sometimes all that is needed is extra support from your team midwife or from one of our Maternity Care Assistants. It is my expectation however that everyone will treat you with kindness and respect and never be judgemental!

It sounds like you have built up a good relationship with your midwifery team and I am sure they will be giving you all the help and support you will need becoming a mum and with your new baby. Please don’t be afraid to ask them for help!

I will share your posting with the pre-birth team to make them aware of how you felt and look at how we can make these meetings better. If there is anything I can do to help please feel free to contact me.

With best wishes to you for a wonderful time being a new mum and to your wee bundle when he or she arrives!

Gail
