"A&E and McGill Ward"

About: Royal Hampshire County Hospital / Accident and emergency

I want to A&E as emergency as Cellulitis was moving up leg and I was having breathing problems and a fever. All staff in A&E were fantastic with me. I was given bed on McGIll Ward at 0530 the next day. I saw A&E Dr along with another Dr who we're both very pleasant and helpful. I was told I was lucky to have gone in when I had as I had the start of Sepsis, and had to be moved to their high care part of the ward.

Whilst I was washing a healthcare asst was helping me, when a nurse came in (who was an agency nurse) they had argument or disagreement with healthcare asst, in front of me this disagreement should have taken place in private between both. When I moved in to bay E which was high care I found staff were very helpful and friendly. Once I got a bit better I was moved to another bay, which was very short staffed and didn't have time for patients. Most of the patients were elderly and one lady needed a commode half an hour later she still hadn't been brought a commode. I found a nurse at a desk and I explained the lady needed loo and I was told wait for the nurse in your bay to come back well the lady collapsed so had to get a nurse. Instead of pressing buzzer I went back to get the nurse at the desk, they then helped. If the nurse had helped in the first place this could have been avoided.

Surely if they are short staffed then staff sitting at desk should be able to assist. I felt the night nurses were patronising. The food is ok but I was kept in 10 days. I was told twice I could go home by bed mgr. I asked a nurse a question and they said it was not on computer that I was going home. The next day a dr said why did I not go home the day before well the info had not been passed on to other staff who said I had to say. Also the day I wasn't meant to be there a scan was booked and I was collected by porters for that. Very disorganised and confusing. I do not wish to go back to McGill Unit. Not a ward I'd recommend, never again.

Thank you for your feedback regarding our emergency department and McGill ward. I would like to apologise that the care and treatment on your recent visit was not of the high standards we aim to provide. I have shared your comments with the clinical leaders for the ward who will use them to help develop and improve our services for future patients. However, if you wish to discuss your individual circumstances further, please contact our customer care team on 01256 486766 or email customercare@hhft.nhs.uk.
