"Ridiculous Reception staff"

About: King Edward Vii Hospital / Ophthalmology

Was expecting an appointment for July. This did not arrive. Called to chase up and was given 1 for August - not a problem. Received a letter a few days letter to say my appointment had been cancelled at my request and changed to September - it certainly hadn't been requested to be cancelled. After calling the receptionist explaining I cannot wait that long to be seen and that I had not requested to cancel the appointment, I was told that it was 'just something they put on the letters' and that staff have 'no control in what is written on the letters' - even if it is factually incorrect. Requested for my original appointment to be honoured as I had not requested to cancel it and was told I would receive a call back. This did not happen. Chased again and was met with the same response - I'll get a call back. Did not happen. Few days letter received a letter in the post saying hospital have had to change the appointment (at least it said they had to change it). New appointment date - November! From July to November with no explanation as to why. Called up again and told the receptionist this was not on and that I cannot be expected to wait 4 months from when I should have been seen. I am to be seen every 6 months at the doctors request and was basically told to wait 10 months. Was told I would receive a call back - did not happen. Called again and was finally met by somebody competent. They explained Saturday clinics were being added and I would receive an appointment for October - still 3 months after date but by that point I did not have the will to argue. Absolutely disgraceful service by incompetent reception staff who clearly don't know what they're doing but too proud to admit it. Children would have run a better service just by being honest. Just saw the doctor and they were appalled by the delay. Wants to see me again in 6 months. Guess I will start chasing in December.

We are sorry to hear you have had such problems with your appointments; this is certainly not the standard we aim for. The Directorate Manager will discuss this with the team but without specific details it is hard to look at what may have happened. It would be helpful if you could contact us so that we may look into this in more detail. If you contact our Patient Relations Team on 0118 322 8338 or email talktous@royalberkshire.nhs.uk please.
