"Sigmoidoscopy Queen Margaret Dunfermline"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Endoscopy

(as a service user),

Firstly all the nursing staff were 100% in dealing with patients one to one.

This was, over the years my 4th sigmoid.....the third one was incredibly painful as the sedation was not effective but at this 4th one i was advised to speak to the dr on the day to raise my fears and they would deal with it......its in my notes, I've told the nurses, I've told the doctor...they gave me sedation to no effect, the procedure was awful, so painful they tried to get me to breathe through it but eventually they had to stop.

Awful......just awful. I asked why it needed to be so painful and a nurse told me I have diverticulitis, which makes the procedure more painful.

I am angry, this just isnt necessary. I am traumatised enough that I'll never have another one, no matter what the problem with my bowel is...unless they knock me out.

Also...i was told to arrive at 0930, i was still sitting waiting at 1245 with no explanation of why!

Now thats ok, things happen, but i have chronic pain, fibromyalgia all in my notes.....nothing was taken into account. I am still in abdominal pain, more than before the procedure....to be expected, fatigue, light headed......rest omg this just wasn't necessary.

I have opened my copy of the report as the dr advised to get meds from my gp to calm bowel.....i cant read their writing, its an utter mess....i hope my gp can understand it.

Never again....this needs to be looked at.

Dear chickamoo

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience in Endoscopy Unit at Queen Margaret Hospital. I am sorry to learn that you felt the procedure was not adequately performed due to the extent of pain you endured and that you were not informed about the delay on that day.

I am keen to discuss your concerns with you directly if you would, at this stage find it helpful. I would be grateful if you could give me a call so I can arrange this. I can be contacted directly on 01383 623623 ext. 20272 or by email nothando.senda-ndaba@nhs.net.

Kindest Regards

Nothando Senda-Ndaba (Sister)
