Being my first pregnancy, I am unfamiliar with the structure of pre natal appointments required. I have found all of the information that I have been provided as useful and initially found the whole process very organised and reassuring as well as the majority of the staff who I have met. Unfortunately, this did not continue and from around 22 weeks onwards I have found myself at several appointments that have not been scheduled correctly as well as being misinformed regarding cancelling appointments and now not being referred in time to attend any parental classes, which as a first time mother I am now very anxious about.
The main confusion seems to be from a lack of communication between community and hospital midwives and also a lack of competent notes then passed between these two systems in spite of the digital note systems in place. As I am still working, I have taken a considerable amount of time off to attend appointments I have been told are necessary, only to then be faced with confused staff regarding why I am there, or for these to have been scheduled too early (calculated by staff, not myself) which has then meant that the necessary bloods, tests etc could not happen at that point and leaving me to try and book another appointment at short notice and then putting me later in the pregnancy than is desirable.
At an appointment that was supposed to be with my consultant at the hospital at around 24 weeks, I was advised due to a staff absence that I could see her at a later date and a complete rescheduling of all my appointments was done by a midwife at the hospital, including me being advised to cancel my midwife appointments at 28 weeks as I was told this was unnecessary and could be carried out at the hospital upon my return. When I returned at 27 weeks (due to miscalculation) I was then informed that the normal 28 weeks checks couldn't be done that day but would be done the next week, again at the hospital as I was already in for GTT testing. Again, I attended this appointment only to be told that was not the case (and had also not been noted in my notes as I was informed it would be) and I would have to see my community midwife, which was then not possible as I had cancelled this appointment as advised previously. By the time I saw my midwife I was around30 weeks and this has then culminated with my not being reffered correctly for parenting classes and being informed it may be too late as they are very busy. I did also state at the 22 weeks appointment I would like referred for this service and asked again at the hospital regarding this.
I feel as a result of this this very confusing appointment scheduling I am now completely unprepared and very unsure of the how to proceed when I do go into labour.
