"Lack of person centred care"

About: Heartlands Hospital

My nan was admitted to ward 20 late evening where following transfer from A&E we settled her in then went home.

Following day we returned asked for a update to be told the reason for her decline was her dementia was now advanced - the nurse could not clarify how this decision was made.

Luckily the doctor was kind enough to talk to us and advise that this was not the case he recognised her dementia but advised the acute confusion could be down to dehydration or the fall she had experienced as she had increased pain.

It's very upsetting to think that my nan was labelled as 'dementia' rather than the person she is.

It's upsetting to think we have to leave my nan in a place where she is being wrongly diagnosed and labelled.

Dear Relative,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments, regarding your Nan’s care at Heartlands Hospital.

I am pleased that the doctor took the time to speak to you; however I am very sorry that you feel that your Nan was labelled and incorrectly diagnosed.

If you would be willing to provide further details such as your Nan’s name, date of birth and address, together with your contact details, as a Trust we would be happy to look into these issues.

You can do this by either contacting a member of the Patient Services Team on 0121 424 0808 (lines open 9am - 3.30pm, Monday to Friday) or you can email your concerns to bhs-tr.Complaints-ConcernsandCompliments@nhs.net

I will forward your posting the Senior Nursing Staff for Ward 20, so they are of your comments.

Yours sincerely

Jenny Langham

Patient Services Officer
