"My mothers anxiety"

About: Let’s Talk Well Being ( IAPT) – Nottingham

(as a relative),

My mother was referred to let's talk well being by her GP.

She said it was "useless" they just listened, nothing happened. It is obvious to anyone that she suffers anxiety. I don't think my mum was given professional help in revealing and opening up about her anxiety. This was over two years ago and now

Her anxiety is worse. She will not leave the house alone, she is scared of her own shadow. The smallest thing, sends her into a terrible panic and she reports to her bed. It is like she is just waiting to die, she is addicted to morphine. She hardy will eat,

I feel that when she came to let's talk wellbeing, that her anxiety was not recognised by the counsellor, therefore it has become so advanced now, as it has not been treated. I feel that the most effective treatment would have been for her to receive "cognitive behavioural therapy". It is awful to see my mother in mental and physical pain, I feel helpless and let down by the service, which has resulted in it also affecting my own mental and physical health. This year I have been diagnosed with under active thyroid. I have had shingles too, which may have been brought on by worrying about my mother.

Hi

I am one of the managers and therapists in the service, and I wanted to respond to what you have said here.

I am really sorry to hear that was your mothers experience. I would absolutely agree that we should be offering CBT where anxiety is the main problem identifed; it has a much stronger evidence base for this. Counselling by its very nature would be less structured, and directed by your Mother, so it sounds like the decision as to which treatment approach would be was the part that didn't work very well. (counselling has its best effect with mild to moderate depression)

If you would like me to look into that further, then I would be more than happy to do so, and get back to you - I would need a name and date of birth. You can contact me on

letstalknottingham@nottshc.nhs.uk

or 0115 9560888

If you are concerned about her use of morphine/ opiates, then I would encourage you to flag this up with her GP

I get the impression that this is all having an impact on you too. being a carer is very demanding and can all too easily take its toll on us. if you think we could help, then I would encourage you to give us a try too. We offer a variety of types of therapy, and different ways of accessing them too. most of it is CBT, or CBT based, and most of it is face to face, but we do other types of therapy (that are recommended as effective by NICE, the National Institute for Clincal Excellence), and there are some options for phone or on-line working if that suits you better

Really sorry again that we weren't helpful first time around, and do let me know if I can be of any further help.
