"Discharge of a patient"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital

My partner was discharged from hospital last week after spending 7 weeks after an AAA. At first everything was fine. He was supposed to be medically fit but it was obvious on his return he was not physically fit his weight loss was frightening and he informed me that towards the end he was Ignored on several occasions. No one informed either of us how he should be cared for at home. Surely his weight and also the fact he could not have bowel movements and vomiting should have checked bedore discharge. This has not only distressed us but the family. Also his Doctor had not received the discharge so a copy was given it was noticed that no medically fit discharged was given. We have had to organise Doctors to prescribe laxatives and anti sickness tablets. There used to be aftercare but obviously there is not. On a different note most of the nurses were good but I realise NHS is cut to the bone. Surely patients should come first

Dear Anonymous

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your partners experience on the ward following an AAA. Sorry to hear you feel we could have done more to inform you and support you and your partner through the discharge process.

I have sent your comments to the ward sister and she has asked me to share the following with you:

“I am sorry that you were not happy with some aspects of the care that your partner received and that adequate information was not given to you on discharge. I have reviewed the medical notes and I feel that the care that was given to your partner met our standards and that processes were followed with regard to nutritional support. Individual cases are difficult to comment on and I would be happy to discuss this with you further on the telephone or in person if you wish”?

We will be holding a Trust Stakeholder event on Thursday 28 September (3 – 5pm) and one of the topics being discussed will be Discharge which you have mentioned as a concern. If you (or your partner) are in a position to attend it would be good to get your feedback in more detail.

Regards

Patient Engagement Team
