"Useless and damaging"

About: Ealing IAPT

I sought out this service when I was experiencing a bad flare up of my PTSD. At my first intake appointment the counselor called me an addict because I was taking medication prescribed by a Doctor from my home country for my PTSD. The counselor then missed appointments without notification and I only found out when I turned up to the office and they told me they were sick. When we finally came together again the counselor told me that I did not fit into the boxes on their list of treatable disorders and that I was too complex. The counselor sent me away just saying to call someone else and that I would have to pay for private care, which I can't afford. Frankly the counselor's disdain for me from the beginning was not conducive to a healing environment. The doctor refused to accept that because I have been dealing with and heal for years from my PTSD that I could not have a sudden flare up. I came for help and went away with a terrible opinion of this whole service. I will never recommend this for anyone because you are trying to heal from lists of symptoms and mental health is never that way as each person is individual to what they are going through and how they can be helped.

Dear "Anonymous"

Thank you for posting on Care Opinion. I was very concerned to read your account of your experience with the service and I am sorry that you went away with a very poor opinion of Ealing IAPT. It seems as if we have got a number of things wrong here and which I will look into more closely.

It is true to say that we sometimes receive referrals or self referrals for clients that we are not equipped to treat due to the complexity of the issues and beyond the remit of a service which is targeted towards mild to moderate problems. In these cases we endeavor to signpost people to more appropriate services and I note that this seems not to have happen in your case.

I would be really keen to discuss the issues you have experienced in further detail to see if there is anything I can do to ameliorate the situation.

I would be grateful if you could contact me on the service number: 020 3313 5661 or louise.deharo@nhs.net

Yours sincerely

Dr Louise De Haro
Deputy Clinical Lead Ealing IAPT
