"Outpatient Hysteroscopy experience"

About: St Mary's Hospital / Gynaecology

I have been referred to St Mary's from another Trust for treatment of a Gynae related condition and within the space of 2 weeks have attended on 3 separate occasions for various tests with the most recent being a hysteroscopy in the Outpatients department. Prior to the appointment I had received a letter confirming the date, time and information leaflet relating to the procedure and what I could expect.

I arrived on the day feeling a little apprehensive due to stories I had heard about it being a very uncomfortable and often painful procedure. Within minutes of booking in with reception and taking a seat in the waiting area I was called through to the consultants room by a lovely nurse (name I didn't get unfortunately) and was introduced to the consultant carrying out the procedure and another nurse who would be present during the appointment. The consultant took the time to explain the procedure, the reasons for this and gave me plenty of opportunities to ask questions and when I did answered them in a very informative manner.

I won't go into detail about the procedure however I will say that I was made to feel comfortable throughout, the consultant explained what they were doing at all times and I never felt anything more than a slight, mild discomfort for a very very short period of time. I also never felt at anytime, either pre or post appointment, rushed or had no understanding of what was happening.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to both the consultant and the nursing team present that day who assisted me and helped me to feel relaxed.

I would also like to add that during all 3 appointments every member of staff I have encountered have been friendly, helpful and offered information at all times.

Thank you for your positive comments posted on the NHS Choices website regarding your care in the Hysteroscopy Clinic at The Women’s Outpatients Department in Saint Mary’s Hospital. It was very kind of you to take the time to write and compliment the staff as it is good to receive positive feedback which reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff. It was reassuring to read that you found the medical and nursing staff all took the time to reassure you and provide you with the right level of information that enabled you to find this experience a positive one. The Trust has introduced a Behavioural framework within which all members of the nursing and medical teams work and the women and their families in our care are central to this ethos. I can assure you that we have passed on your feedback to Dr Gail Busby, Clinical Director for Gynaecology and Mrs Pam Kilcoyne, Lead Nurse for Gynaecology who will ensure the staff involved are aware of your kind thoughts.
