"1st time in hospital"

About: Circle-Nottingham NHS Treatment Centre

I had a Saturday afternoon surgery slot @ 1300 for an epididymal cyst removal & this was my first personal experience of going through hospital treatment.

The staff (in particular the nurse) were all very helpful from the first moment I entered until I was allowed to leave.

I was led to my own personal cubicle and went through some paperwork and then left for about 3 hours until the anaesthetic nurse came to get me. This was a very nervous apprehensive time for me and the ward nurses could have taken some time to talk through the procedures and put my mind at ease more.

Once in theatre I was put to sleep with a general anaesthetic pretty quickly and awoke back in the ward. The only complaint I have is that I seemed to be rushed into getting my clothes on and being discharged when I was still very drowsy and under the influence of the anaesthetic. It was only about 20 -30mins from waking to leaving and in hindsight this should have been longer.

I stumbled unaided and had to hold on to the rails or chairs to get out of the ward. My wife and young children were waiting for me and they said I came out s white as a sheet and sweating profusely and they had to help me to the lifts and into the car (of which I can't even remember)

If you are to learn from this then please provide more care and attention to patients who are new to the whole hospital process and make sure they are in a relatively reasonable state before dispatching them home.
