"Appointment for injection"

About: Royal Orthopaedic Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I had a steroid injection by x-ray in my ankle in May. I had a review appointment at the beginning of August. I have nothing but praise for the medical staff involved, or the cleanliness of the ward. However, after the review appointment I was referred back for a second injection, this time under ultrasound. The doctor told me the wait would be about four weeks, but because of an upcoming holiday he advised me to ring the department and ask for a cancellation appointment, if there was one. I duly did this. I heard nothing at all until I received a letter on the 31st August. My post came at 12.50, and when I opened the envelope it contained an appointment for that day at 10.45! On further investigation, I found out that the letter was written on the 24th August, and posted on the 29th August with a second class stamp. It was never going to get to me before the appointment time! When I phoned up the number on the letter and spoke the person who makes the appointments, their comment was 'Oh well, these things happen!'

I find this an entirely unsatisfactory situation. I now have to go back on the waiting list, and go on holiday with an extremely painful ankle!

I am sorry that your letter did not arrive on time. I have passed your comments to the Patient Access Team to review what happened to your letter in the hope of preventing it happening again. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact the PALS team on 0121 685 4128.

Kind Regards
