"When i had my children"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Maternity unit

(as the patient),

When I had my children I experienced 2 totally different treatments. My first child being born by C-section the midwife barely spoke to me she didn't tell me anything that was going to happen during the procedure or after. What was meant to be a joyous time turned out to be a very stressfully event. My second child again born by C-section the midwife in charge of my care was the total opposite, she explained everything in detail and gave me the time to speak about my wishes and fears. She constantly reassured me throughout my experience and even popped by the next day to see how I was. The last gesture meant the most to me because I was no longer under her care as an individual but she took the time to speak to me anyway.

Dear Elbo

Thank you for your posting.

I was saddened to read about your first experience of our care. Being a first time mum and going for a caesarean section must have been really frightening and I am sorry that the midwife caring for you did not give you the reassurance and support you needed. I can only imagine the emotions and anxieties you would have had before the birth of your second baby so it is fantastic to know that this was a much better experience and the midwife took the time to listen to you and was very caring. It is often the little acts of kindness, like popping in the next day, that make all the difference and leave a lasting impression.

Although I am unsure when your children were born I will ensure staff see your posting and reflect on the impact of your birth experiences. We strive to ensure all of our mums are put at the centre of care that meets their individual needs and will continue to ensure this happens.

With best wishes

Gail
