"Excellent support from South Western Ambulance Service"

About: South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as a relative),

I am writing to bring to your attention the outstanding level of care and compassion exhibited by Tom and Nigel on the night of 28th June when my Mother was taken seriously ill and sadly subsequently passed away.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, having had two visits from doctors during the afternoon and evening, I needed to call out an ambulance to attend my Mother. She had been suffering from aggressive cancer to the oesophagus which had also spread to her lungs. The doctors had assured us that things would be alright but at around 12. 30 things took a turn for the worst.

Tom and Nigel (6302) arrived promptly in response to my call and I cannot thank them enough for the way they dealt with the situation. They were totally professional in the way they comforted and treated Mum who was very frightened. They took control and whilst Nigel looked after Mum (and myself) Tom liaised with Macmillan Nurse, Out of Hours Doctor and Nurses and kept me informed every step of the way. We were keen that Mum was not to be subjected to A&E and Tom had arranged that a bed would be available for her at the Macmillan ward the following morning. Only when they and I were satisfied that Mum appeared to be stable for the night did they leave. They went out of their way to make sure she was comfortable and that I was content for them to go.

Unfortunately, later in the night she deteriorated further necessitating another 999 call. My prayers were answered when again Tom and Nigel arrived. Their presence reassured Mum and realising that the end was close they made her as comfortable as possible and supported us until after Mum passed away. I can honestly say that they made the difference in a heart-breaking situation. I will always be in their debt. They gave my Mum a dignified and compassionate end but were also so kind to my Aunt, husband and myself, I cannot thank them enough.

They are a credit to the Ambulance Service and I would be grateful if you could pass on my sincere thanks and gratitude to them both.

Dear Sincerely Grateful,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story and we are sorry to hear of your loss.

It is always rewarding to hear stories of how our staff are delivering care and support to patients and those around them when they need it most.

We would be happy to share your story with the ambulance staff involved in your mother's care, however, to do so we will need some specific information. If you would like us to do this, please may I ask you to contact us on either plaudits@swast.nhs.uk or 01392 453 831 and a member of the Patient Engagement Team will be happy to help you further.

Thank you, again, for taking the time to provide us with feedback.

Kind regards,

Sharifa
