"The care my son received"

About: Raigmore Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

On holiday and my 6 year old son fell off a set of monkey bars it was obvious something wasn't right with his arm. Being 150 miles from home and a further 30 miles from the nearest hospital panic set in with how we can take him on the journey in his pain. We phoned Aviemore medical centre who advised us to bring him in to see them. I could not believe that they were able to administer pain relief, X-ray and put on a cast unfortunately he needed an operation but this temporary measure made him comfortable for his special 'road trip'. Aviemore health centre organised our visit for the next morning and discussed all eventualities so we felt prepared.

The next morning we attended the children's ward at Raigmore where we were promptly met by nursery nurse, nurses and medical staff involved in my sons operation. We were taken straight to theatre and kept informed at all times. My sons recovery was straight forward and so got discharged same day with follow up appointments being made in our own health board for our return.

In 24 hours of my son breaking his arm in 2 places we had been treated by many caring and compassionate staff, had X-rays, casts and theatre and now back at our lodge to enjoy the rest of our holiday together.

This has been the NHS at its finest and it all comes down to each individual member of staff who carried out their roles with perfection. I too work for the NHS and will be taking my story back to work to demonstrate and share all this good practice to show the importance that we can as individuals make when we work well as a multidisciplinary team.

Hello GR8

Thanks for the posting. What a shame this happened on your holiday but I hope your son is well on the road to recovery.

It is good to get your perspective both as a mum and as a colleague. I couldn't agree more people need us to work well as a team. I will be sure to pass your feed-back.
