"I can’t understand why there was no other option than to take the lift"

About: Bedford Hospital NHS Trust

(as a service user),

The hospital is usually very good but I went in to have some blood tests taken and didn’t have a very nice experience. I believe the place where you have bloods taken now is the building that used to be the mental health inpatient building. I suffer with claustrophobia and PTSD due to a crime that happened in the past. Because of this I really struggle to use lifts and always take the stairs instead. However when I arrived at the building there was no option to take the stairs, only the lift and there was no one there to ask for help either. I had to ask some of the people there that weren’t staff to help me. I really struggled and was in a terrible state, even after I got home.

When I got to the reception desk where you hand your sheet in at the desk. I asked if someone could support me to get back down after I’d had my bloods taken but the lady at the desk ignored me and carried on wiping he desk, so I asked again and she ignored me again and made no eye contact. It made me feel very uncomfortable. The blood testing people are usually very good. I ended up not having my bloods taken because I was shaking so much. I ended up leaving and luckily a nurse supported me to go back down. I won’t be going back there again.

I can’t understand why there was no other option than to take the lift and why there was no one there to help me.
